In 1957, Nick Georgas opened a stand-alone store called “Nick’s Tobacconist” in Kings Cross, laying the foundation for what would become a lasting legacy. Today, Nick’s Tobacconist holds the distinction of being the longest continually owned business in Sydney’s iconic Kings Cross.
The family business flourished, with Nick’s children, George and Diana, growing up behind the counters. George’s first job was at the Centrepoint store on Saturdays at the tender age of nine.
Over the years, the humble beginnings of Nick’s Tobacconist transformed into the thriving CTC franchise, which expanded to over 40 stores by 2003. This growth was fueled by a deep understanding of family business values, nurtured through years of hands-on experience. The tradition continued with Nick’s grandchildren, all of whom worked in the shops at one time, embodying the family’s pride and commitment to their business.
This rich history of dedication and familial involvement underscores the CTC group’s strong foundation and enduring success.
As the years past, George became an exceptional tobacconist retailer, learning the trade from ground up until in 1989, George took over the coveted Kings Cross store.
3 years later, in 1992, George and his then partner Andrew, formed a group of independent tobacco retailers called the Independent Price Cutters Association (IPCA). George recognised the need for unity in the industry as well as their strength in numbers if they were to survive and service long term in an ever changing, more controlling marketplace.
Following this venture, the Smoke Spot came to life in early 1996, where the group traded under license with 21 stores until 1998 when the franchising code of conduct became legislation, leading all stores to transition into a franchise agreement.
Towards 2003, the group grew to 40 plus stores and to pre-empt future legislation changes, the CTC Cigarettes Tobacco and Cigars brand was developed.
This allowed the brand to highlight what we do as a destination under current legislation, and also offer us an opportunity to simplify the brand to CTC should legislation change.
The rest as they say, is history!
